Explorer Post #319
The Explorer Post is jointly sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America, and is managed and funded by the Iselin Volunteer Fire Company #1 and the District 9 Board of Fire Commissioners.
The mission of the Explorer Post is to introduce young men and women between the ages of 14 and 18 to the fire service. The members of the Explorer Post are provided with basic firematic, hazardous materials, and safety training. When an Explorer turns 18 years of age, they are eligible to apply for membership in the Iselin Volunteer Fire Company #1.
The Explorer Post is an excellent way for our youth to provide a valuable community service, develop new friendships, and learn about the exciting science of firefighting.
The 20th Anniversary of our Explorer Post was celebrated in 2017.

Training
There are several opportunities each month for the Explorers to participate in training activities.
The Explorers train as a group twice a month, learning basic firefighting skills. The Explorers also participate in the Fire Company's training, working side by side with the firefighters.
Training topics include as: hydrant and hose operations, self contained breathing apparatus, incident management, hazardous materials, first aid/CPR, ladders, and forcible entry.

Ride Along Program
Successful completion of the basic training program leads to Explorers becoming eligible to participate in the fire department Ride Along Program. The fire department Ride Along Program allows Explorers to respond to emergencies (with certain restrictions) on the fire apparatus with the firefighters. The Ride Along Program allows the Explorers to experience the excitement of an actual emergency response, and lets them observe the various activities that occur on scene. Although Explorers are not allowed to be actively engaged in emergency mitigation efforts, they do provide valuable assistance to the firefighters operating at the scene.

Field Trips
Periodically, the Explorers take field trips to visit other emergency services related organziations. Among the agencies visited are:
* Baltimore City Fire Department
* Pennsylvania Fire Museum
* Maryland Fire Museum
* New York City Fire Department
* Newark Liberty Airport Fire Station
