Around 1800 hours on Saturday evening, Units from District 9 and 11 were alerted for a Structure Fire on E. George Street in District 11. While units were enroute, District 11 Chief Comi was informed by radio that there was fire showing from the rear and immediately called for the First Alarm. Upon his arrival, Chief Comi established E. George Command and transmitted the Second Alarm with heavy fire and smoke throughout. Engines 9-6 and 11-1 arrived simultaneously, followed by 9-5, 11-3 and Ladder 9-2-4. The crew from 9-6 stopped at the hydrant and supplied 11-1 with water, then made entry into the front door to conduct primary searches, while the crew from 11-1 stretched a 1 3/4" handline and began to attack the fire on the first floor. The crew of 9-5 and 11-3 stretched another 1 3/4" handline to the back yard and gained entry into the basement where they were met with heavy fire conditions. Despite the aggressive interior attack on the first floor and in the basement, all crews had to be evacuated from the building due to the large volume of fire. Ultimately, the master stream from Ladder 9-2-4, as well as multiple handlines were operated from the exterior for several hours until the fire was completely extinguished. Mutual Aid companies from Colonia, Avenel, Fords, Hopelawn, Keasbey, Carteret, and South Plainfield were on scene, while Metuchen and Port Reading stood by in District 11's firehouse to cover the township. The house was left uninhabitable and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
